READYSNACKS CAFE is a clean, old fashioned working mans cafe, of the type that is fast becoming harder to find in this age of burger bars and pre wrapped, factory produced sandwiches..

We serve basic food cooked with care, .our customers are the local workers, bus drivers, office workers , etc:. If you are in WOOLWICH, give the place a try..

Readysnacks cafe has existed in Woolwich at various addresses since 1955 when my father was "given" the place by the retiring owner. at this time I was only five years old and not too interested in catering.. Over the years, the name has changed a couple of times but the business has always remained in the family. Passing first to my brother ( who now runs " READYSNACKS 2" in Folkestone ) and then to myself.. I have been the owner since 1980.

The original cafe was situated in the old ferry approach, right next to the entrance to the foot tunnel, which still exists behind the Waterfront leisure centre. The WOOLWICH FERRY moved to its new location in 1966 and a few years later, the local council bought up all the properties in ferry approach and Readysnacks moved to its present address at......

111, Woolwich high st. LONDON SE18 6DN

Before you move on to the price list, how about a bit about me.... ?

Right then, my name is Chris and I was born in Silvertown East London on the eighteenth of August 1950.. As you can see from the photo, I am quite bonkers...I have a wife and young daughter..  and a tank of tropical fish.    I also have a big brother by the name of Barry (who runs a cafe in Folkestone).. my interests are Amateur radio ( Callsign G0EFA ) and tinkering about with the PC.

Top Secret Recipe

Bubble & Squeak

Some overseas visitors to this site may not be familiar with the Traditional English delicacy called Bubble & Squeak When I was younger, mum used to save all the surplus or leftover veg from the sunday dinner, mix it all together and fry it. Deeeelicious.. As we now have strict hygiene rules to follow, I cant really save all the customers leftovers.. So I have to make it from fresh vegetables.. It is a top seller at READYSNACKS CAFE and this is how I make mine........... When reading the amounts, please bear in mind that I am cooking a big batch at a time , so adjust the amounts accordingly if you fancy giving it a try

This is Jan...I could'nt manage without her

2.5kilos washed potatoes...unpeeled 2.5 kilos Brussels sprouts 100grammes best butter 1 level dessertspoon Black Pepper

Boil the Potatoes and sprouts together for 25 minutes...drain off and leave to stand for ten minutes...add the butter and pepper then mash the whole lot together.. at this stage, you can if you wish cool the mixture and store it in a covered container (in the fridge) for up to about 3 days. Now onto the final stage.... which is the frying..

At the cafe I use a small omelette pan to fry up one portion at a time, A little vegetable oil is ok , but as I am always frying bacon, then I prefer to use a little bacon fat for better flavour.. Heat the oil then spoon in enough bubble for one person..use a fork or spoon to flatten it down over the pan and then leave it alone for a couple of minutes on a high gas..Then flip it over like a pancake and let the other side cook. You should see a nice dark brown colouring on the cooked side, if not, you may be going a little too light on the oil. When both sides are a nice colour, turn it out like an omelette and wrap your choppers around it as soon as possible..As a general guide, most of my customers like theirs quite well done, even a bit black and crunchy......verrrry yummy
